The primary school of Ancient Olympia is a public school which was founded in 1887 and is located next to the town of Ancient Olympia. Ancient Olympia is a historic town of 1500 inhabitants as well as the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The ancient Olympic Games started in 776 B.C and took place once every four years as is the case with the modern Olympic Games after their revival in 1896. The journey of the Olympic Flame begins from Ancient Olympia and the Olympic Torch is carried by athletes in the city that has undertaken the task to organize the Games.
Our new school building was built in 2005, on the outskirts of the town of Ancient Olympia. There are 10 classrooms, a music room, a library, a first aid room, a multipurpose hall, a computer lab and a small P.E room for indoor activities. There is also a basketball, volleyball and a handball court as well as a dirt track. In our school there are 160 students and 20 teachers. 10% of our students come from other countries and they face difficulties with the Greek language up to a degree but in general they have adjusted to the Greek educational system and the Greek way of life since they are second generation immigrants. Students’ families belong to the middle class and occupy themselves in the touristic and agricultural sector. Parents are interested a lot in their children’s education as well as the learning of foreign languages since it is a means of communication with the tourists who visit the Archaeological museum everyday as well as the picturesque town of Ancient Olympia.
