At the beginning of the current school year our school participated in an event called “Sports Day” (a day dedicated to sports). The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and the theme of the day was summarized under the title “Racism- All is equal, all is different”. That day the students were familiarized with sports that foster cooperation as well as with sports for people who are physically challenged. In particular, first and second graders played outdoor games that promote cooperation and are not competitive at all in the school playground. The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders played sitting volleyball, also known as paralympic volleyball and para table tennis (instead of a wheelchair students sat in chairs which they were not allowed to leave and stand up, but they had to find a way to move along with them in order to hit the ball). Also, in the multipurpose hall of the school students watched short films related to the topic.
Our school participates in all the activities that are promoted by the Bureau of Physical Education. So in December 2014 over 80 students from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades participated in mini volleyball matches held in the Sports Hall of Olympia. The teams that participated consisted of both boys and girls and students came from Ancient Olympia, Pyrgos and Zacharo.
Apart from the matches organized at school under the supervision of the Bureau of Physical Education there is also a table tennis championship. The first in- school championship took place last year. This year the table tennis championship will take place in spring. The good news is that this year a proper tennis table will be used in the championship, which is courtesy of the Table Tennis Federation thanks to the intervention of Mr. Isidoros Kouvelos, president of the National Olympic Committee of Greece.
